Eterna Matic 3000 chronometer

£ 995

This is an automatic watch with date that was made in the early 1960s. It has an 18 carat gold case, with a screw-type case back and for an automatic watch, it’s very thin and elegant on the wrist. The case back has a very elegant raised impression of the Shild family crest, the owners of Eterna at this time.

The gold dial has a lovely sunray finish and is in perfect condition, as is the whole watch - it was clearly cherished and retained for best use only. The cal 1466U movement has been fully serviced and is running excellently. The serial number on the movement dates the watch to 1965. The watch has date indication and the movement has a quickset date function - you pull the crown all the way out to advance the date.

The watch came with what I assume is an extract from the Eterna archives, it gives details of where the watch was originally sold and mentions (I think) that it originally came with a gold bracelet.

The word "chronometer” on the dial means that the movement in this watch has passed the very stringent time keeping test applied by the Swiss observatory. The movement would have been tested over several days, at different temperatures and in different positions. In order to pass the test the movement can not have deviated by more than -4 and + 6 seconds variation per day. The time keeping on this watch is still excellent for a vintage watch, pretty much still at chronometer standard.

Eterna developed the first automatic movements that uses ball-bearings in the rotor (the off centre weight that winds the mainspring). This represented a significant advance in the automatic watch mechanism - it reduced the wear on the moving parts. The ball-bearing was so significant for Eterna that the image of five ball bearings was adopted as the company logo and can be seen on both the dial and the crown on this watch.
The watch has been serviced and regulated and it comes with a nos strap. The case has been cleaned by not polished to retain some of the patina of age.
