A watch to celebrate the exploration of Mars.

This Mars themed watch was designed by Print Artist, and also our Senior Print Technician, Paul Wardski.

Far Out was inspired by the Perseverance rover that landed on Mars, and the extraordinary footage that it sent back to Earth.

Paul designed Far Out, then mixed the inks and printed each component himself, before passing it over to the assembly team to be made up into watches.

Paul talks about his inspiration:

“When I first saw the images from Mars taken by Perseverance rover I thought, wow, we are actually discovering a whole new alien planet! We’re receiving these real, detailed landscapes images that we could only imagine before.

It’s pretty mind blowing that humans have managed to put a car sized robot on Mars and that’s able to send these beautiful digital landscape images back to us".

How to read the time:

The time on Far Out is displayed in a conventional way, but it uses celestial forms instead of hands.

Read the time by following the moons of Mars:

  • Phobos (the larger moon) shows you the minutes
  • Deimos (the smaller moon) shows you the hour

Paul Wardski

Paul Wardski is an award winning Artist Printmaker born and residing in London. BA Hons Illustration, (University of Portsmouth), MA Printmaking graduating with Distinction (UAL Camberwell).

Wardski’s practice typically engages with sites of contradiction that are local to him, and within those sites he searches for objects that have been left behind by past inhabitants. By exploring his own relationship with the found object and the space from where it is collected, he finds himself drawn to the tangible motif quality of the objects that have been left behind and discarded. The human element that used to be there is now gone.

Through multiple print processes Wardski creates fictitious interiors housed within an imagined landscape. Painterly surreal rooms and objects, distorted in scale, evoke loss and abandonment. The lightness of photolithography put through an etching press creates a ghost-like quality suggesting what is past. In contrast, the heavy graphic quality of screen-printing allows me to insert and overlay bold objects as motifs; these then speak a language of a decorative nature, creating a false sense of familiarity.

Paul has worked with print-studios across the UK and in Europe including: Edinburgh Printmakers, Limerick Printstudio, Printclub London, East London Printmakers, Thamesside Printmaking Studio, Bainbridge Print, Vith-Haus Printstudio Austria, 3rd Rail Print Space, OBS Portugal.
