5 Lessons from lockdown: what we can learn from 2020

Nov 12, 2020

As 2020 draws to an end, I’m sure many of us are breathing a small sigh of relief. Although this year has been very challenging at times it has definitely put things into perspective and given us all plenty of time to discover new ways of living.

Whether you've discovered your green fingers over lockdown or decided to help out in your local community everyone has their own story to tell from this unique year.

We would love to share 5 important lessons that 2020 has taught us.

Cherish time with your family and friends

Many of us took for granted popping round the corner for a cup of tea with friends and family before we couldn’t do it anymore.

Whether it’s putting your lockdown baking skills to use and dropping a cake at someone’s door or just phoning up an old friend we could all use a little more time with our friends and family.

Be kind to yourself

This year has been a hard one, from adapting to new routines and working environments to the overall anxiety that has come with the uncertainty of 2020.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself if you're feeling less productive. It has been a strange time for everyone. Take time for yourself and do what makes you happy.

Make time for fresh air and exercise

Lockdown really showed us the importance of daily exercise and fresh air even if it’s just a 20 minute walk. This is a great opportunity to take some time away from your desk and enjoy some time with your thoughts (especially if you have a furry friend to accompany you).

Support your local businesses if you can

Since the re-opening of shops it is devastating to see so many small local businesses struggling. With Christmas just around the corner and shopping on everyone’s minds, supporting your local business is a great way to give a thoughtful gift whilst supporting your own community if you're in the fortunate position to be able to do so.

Even if it’s a gift voucher that can be used at a later date it can make a big difference to a local business after such a hard year.

Check up on a friend or neighbour

Everyone has felt the challenges of 2020 in their own way and often it's those who you think are fine that may be struggling the most.

A small gesture such as a note through the door, an offer to do some shopping or asking if a neighbour would like a meal cooked once a week for them could make a huge difference to someone who is feeling isolated. A small offer of kindness can go a very long way.

This year has signified the importance of things we used to take for granted and as the year draws to an end and most are excited for a fresh start it is important to remember the realisations that 2020 has given us.
