A statement watch to express your personality.

British artist Edward Carvalho Monaghan designed this mini-masterpiece. The watch is a piece of wearable artwork that you can enjoy everyday.

Edward’s goal with this design was to disrupt the predictable and challenge existing ideas of how a watch works.

He crafted a surreal scene, which shows you the time - if you know where to look...

The landscape is made up of everyday objects, which have been transformed into a surreal new world.

In this dream-like world, familiar objects take on new colours and unexpected juxtapositions. These hint at secret meanings and the world of perspective is subverted with Esher-like flair.

How to read the time

Reading the time on this watch is deceptively simple, when you know where to look.

If you look through the window, you'll see the line of ships on a horizon. The angle of this horizon marks the hours and the ships tell you which end to read.

Flames emerging from a serpent’s nostrils show you the minutes.

The seconds hand is a square in the middle of the window, another horizon and ship points you in the right direction.

The design

You get a real sense of depth in this watch design, of looking through a window into a new world.

We printed the watch on different planes: on the glass and on the three disc hands. The print uses brilliant colours to give the whole image a sense of vibrancy and energy.

The design creates a contrast between Edward’s surreal illustrations, and the messy reality of a collaged piece of newsprint. The newsprint draws the design back into the real world. It creates a bridge between the worlds of imagination and reality.

The piece of newsprint is different for each edition, making every watch unique. Check the group image above to choose your favourite edition number.

Due to the hand-made nature of the design, it’s limited to just 50 pieces worldwide.

Below is a short clip of the watch moving in real time.

About the artist

Edward Carvalho Monaghan portrait

Edward Carvalho-Monaghan graduated from Central St Martins School of Art & Design in 2014. Since graduating he has worked for a diverse range of clients, from fashion brand Hermès, to newspapers The Guardian and The New York Times.

Edward is a master of reductive storytelling: creating complex narratives with a few simple lines that make an increasing amount of sense the more you stare at them. While he readily cites psychedelic music and the work of avant-garde filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky as strong influences, it’s his desire to create work that doesn't draw on visual references or pander to stylistic trends, that makes him such an exciting talent.
