An inordinate fondness for beetles

Limited Edition numbers available:

On being asked what one could learn about God from a study of nature, the Victorian biologist J. B. S. Haldane answered crisply, “he has an inordinate fondness for beetles”

There are 350,000 identified species of beetle, accounting for 30% of all animal life. An inordinate fondness for beetles is a celebration of this most abundant of insectsWe created the design with artist and illustrator Lucy Eves, the design features a swarming mass of beetles arranged over the case, glass, dial and disc hand. Lucy explains,

“the design is inspired by those wonderfully intricate and diverse displays of pinned Victorian entomological collections, yet the beetles here are on the move, swarming and scuttling in every direction, creating a mobile bug-box to exhibit on your arm. Time flies? Maybe it just beetles..."

With this design we aspired to capture some of the vibrancy and chaos of the natural world and contrast it with the rigidity of the time telling functions of the watch. The beetles on the dial scurry in all directions, while the human need to impose order on the chaos is reflected in the neat, methodical arrangement of insects on the hour disc where the time is read.

On this watch the hour is read from the position of the coloured beetle in the crescent shape on the dial. The crescent represents 12 hours, when you see the green beetle moving across this area the time displayed is between 6am and 6pm (running from left to right). After 6pm the green beetle disappears on the right and the red beetle rises on the left. Thus the position of the red beetle in the crescent shows the hours from 6pm until 6am (don't worry if the above sounds complicated - it's a really simple system which becomes second nature!)

The display is based on the Sun and Moon watches that were first produced in Britain in the late 1600s during a period of experimentation with the watch face and how to represent the time, before the concentric hour and minute hands became established as the universal standard which we still use.

An inordinate fondness was produced by us in our London workshop, the watch is released in an edition of 100 pieces, with each watch numbered on the back of the case.
