On this watch the time is indicated by the position of the Sun or Moon in the crescent shaped sky on the watch dial. The Sun moves across the sky from the left to the right, it indicates the hours from 6am to 6pm. The Moon follows the same path and indicates the hours from 6pm until 6am. The minutes and seconds are displayed in the centre dial and are read in the conventional manner, so each marker represents 5 minutes for the minute hand, or 5 seconds for the second hand.
A diverse cast of characters populate the day and night scenes, ranging from the benign sunflowers and unicorns of the daytime, to scary monsters who roam the darkness of the night.
This special edition of Sun and Moon was created for us by New York artist and illustrator Kirsten Ulve, “I like the notion of doing away with specific time telling, and embracing a more relaxed attitude. Symbols indicate the general time: dreamy unicorn sightings in the morning, the universal quest for cheese in the day, then some heavy drinking in the evening, followed by a bump in the night and monsters in the wee hours. Typical day kind of stuff without the need for those bothersome numbers."
Sun and Moon watches were originally a type of pocket watch that was first produced in Britain in the late 1600s during a period of experimentation with the watch face and how to represent the time. Eventually, following this period of experimentation the concentric hour and minute hands became established as the universal standard.
