Patek Philippe ref 2551 (1960)

This is an extremely special watch: a Patek Philippe automatic from around 1960, ref 2551. The watch is powered by the first generation of automatic movement that Patek produced. The dial is in flawless, original condition and the waterproof case is a great size at 36mm, which is rather rare in Patek watches of this period which tend to be smaller.

This watch is powered by Patek’s 12-600AT movement, this was really a high point of 20th century watchmaking. Walt Odets describes it thus: “in concept, in construction, and in finish, this is perhaps the most elaborate and costly simple automatic watch movement ever produced.” The movement has been fully serviced and is in tip-top condition and running excellently (timekeeping is superb for a watch that’s 60 years old).

One thing that’s surprising about the Patek automatic movement is the use of a massive 18 carat gold rotor. The reason Patek used gold was purely for it’s weight - the rotor is not visible to the owner of the watch as it's inside the case. This is surely one of the most extraordinary cases of disregarding the expense in pursuit of perfection!

Patek Philippe are considered the pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking - famous for their adherence to the absolute highest standards in everything they do. This is a lovely example of their 1950s / 60s output, which is arguably when they reached their peak, all housed in a generous size waterproof gold case.

The watch is obviously represents a substantial investment, but one which will give many years of pleasure to the owner and which is sure to increase in value over the years.

Simply a superb watch, please make an appointment if you’d like to come to our Oxo shop to view it.
