Mr Jones Watches teamed up with custom motorcycle creators Untitled Motorcycles to create motochrono. This unique watch has a moving frieze that shows a day in the life of Untitled Motorcycles as they take an old, neglected motorbike and breathe new life into it.
Adam Kay from Untitled explains, “we revive old motorcycles and transform them into classics. On motochrono the frieze shows a typical build compressed into 24 hours (in reality it takes many weeks). The day begins with rebuilding the engine accompanied by Archie the workshop cat. After a well-earned cuppa and a spot of lunch, we reassemble the bike for a twilight ride through London".
On motochrono you read the time based on the position of the yellow headlight or red tail light in the crescent on the dial. The crescent represents 12 hours with the time running from left to right. The headlight marks the hours from 6am to 6pm, when it sinks from view as the red tail light rises on the left, so the tail light marks the hours from 6pm through to 6am.
In the centre of the dial are the minute and seconds hands, these work in the conventional manner. The markers around the dial are based on the classic English speedometer designed by Smiths, who by happy coincidence also manufactured a line of watches. Even the strap was created especially for this watch with the transversal stitching echoing the padding on a motorcycle seat.
The movement that powers motochrono is a mechanical automatic, which means it has no batteries and no digital technology. Just like a motorbike engine it can be stripped down, serviced and reassembled to keep it running for a lifetime.
This watch was produced by us in London. We printed and assembled the components in our workshop in Camberwell, south London. The colours were mixed by hand and laid down in turn using our pad printer. The watches were assembled, tested and adjusted by us before being packed up for release. As this is a hand made article there may be some variation on the tone and alignment of the print colours, we believe that this adds to the character of the individual watches.
