Chinoiserie was a collaboration with Verre Églomisé artist Marion Labbez. Verre Églomisé is a traditional technique for gilding onto glass. Marion created a design that shows the time within an imaginary landscape - the hours sit on a cliftop, while the minutes roll through the river below.
Marion used two different alloys of 22 carat gold and two gilding techniques to create variety in the texture and colour of the gilding. Each watch was both printed and gilded by Marion herself to stunning effect. You can watch a video which gives an insight into the production below.
Marion comments:“I don’t think glass gilding has ever been used before to ornate a watch. This collaboration was a chance to create a completely unique piece. It was also an exciting challenge to work on such a different scale to my normal practice. Through a combination of traditional gilding and precise printing, I was able to realise this fanciful vision of an exotic dream-like landscape, which contrasts with the technical rigidity of measured time. The gilding process means that each watch has a slightly different pattern which gives every one it’s own individual personality.”
This is certainly the most labour intensive watch we have created, Chinoiserie is produced in a numbered edition of 100 pieces with each watch numbered on the back of the case.
