The Hidden City is a celebration of the unusual wildlife found in London.

Read the time by checking the position of the parrots in the day or the bat at night.

When you think of a busy and bustling capital city, wildlife isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, is it? However hidden away in London's parks are flocks of exotic parrots.

These bright green birds provide a startling contrast to the grey city. Although their cry is unmistakable, they’re generally difficult to spot as they are well camouflaged by the trees they live in.

Where did these exotic birds come from? There are many curious and bizarre tales about how the parrots settled in London. The most popular is that a few captive parrots escaped from a pet shop in the 1980s. They managed to adapt to the chilly environment of London parkland and have spread through London ever since.

The bat is another unusual city dweller whose numbers are on the increase: with greater attention paid to protecting and preserving their habitats, numbers have swelled in the recent years. Bats are often hidden creatures, but if you're lucky you'll catch sight of them in London's parks at dusk.

How to read the time

The shape above the tree represents 12 hours, with the time running from left to right.

When you see the parrots flying through the sky, the time displayed is between 6am and 6pm. After 6pm the parrots are replaced by a single bat, the position of the bat shows the hours from 6pm through to 6am.

The minutes are displayed by the tiny ladybird on the outside of the dial. These run in the usual way - a complete rotation around the face every 60 minutes.

London made and limited edition

Each colour you can see in the design was mixed by hand and printed on to the watch individually, before it was assembled by hand in our London workshop.

The Hidden City is limited to just 100 pieces worldwide, each watch is numbered on the back of the case, so you can choose your favourite number from the options above.

Crispin Jones

Crispin Jones is the director, founder and designer of Mr Jones Watches. He explains his inspiration for The Hidden City watch:

"I think the first time I saw parrots in London was while cycling at Herne Hill outdoor velodrome some years back. I guess initially I assumed it was just a couple of birds who had escaped, and who wouldn’t survive the winter, but once you’ve spotted one you start to find them everywhere.

I see them most days when I take Stanley (the official Mr Jones Watches dog) for his lunchtime walk.

I have fond memories of the bat who used to visit our garden in Brixton. The first time I saw it I was stunned - a bat in London? Unheard of, I thought! But the bat came back regularly and we felt privileged to witness his darting runs and electric speed in the sky above our garden every time he appeared.

These new, often unseen natives are welcomed by Londoners, I think we cherish the richness they bring to the landscape and this is a metaphor, perhaps for the inclusivity that is such a feature of our city.”

Other designs within our Sun and Moon collection include: Sun and Moon, Wanderlust, Nuage, Miyamoto, The Observatory and An inordinate fondness for beetles.
