The Indefatigable Sphinx

£ 2,500

Escape to the curious world of The Indefatigable Sphinx.

This surreal piece of wearable artwork was designed for us by Edward Carvalho-Monaghan.

You can read the time on its psychedelic landscape, as long as you know where to look:

To find the hour, look to the window on the right of the dial. Each hour the digit will change, some numbers are bold and colourful, while others are more cryptic.

At the same time, you'll notice the winged sphinx gets a new head, giving you an alternative way to view the different hours of the day.

The minute and seconds hands work in the usual way, subtle design cues within the artwork act as markers for reading the position of the hands.

Each watch is powered by a beautiful Swiss made Sellita movement, with a jump hour module that was designed by Johannes Jahnke for Christopher Ward.

Edward describes his eye-catching watch design:

“The watch depicts a surreal, dreamlike landscape. This space exists both outside time and at all possible moments in time simultaneously.

Gods, Goddesses and sacred objects from different cultures, places and times are present within this timeless world.

At the top of the dial the bejewelled all-seeing eye watches over the world, looking back at us and making the link between their world and ours.

My aims are always to expand the dimensions of an image to the farthest possible degree and to create contradictions and suggestions within that space.”

The Indefatigable Sphinx was a real labour of love to produce, each watch representing many hours of work over several years.

Technically it is the most complicated piece we’ve ever created, it has more layers of colour across the dial and hour disc than we’ve ever used on a single watch before.

Each watch has a custom strap that we made in-house. The strap was cut, sewn and finished entirely by hand. It's made of leather from the only remaining oak-bark tannery in Britain.

For a limited time, you'll also receive a stunning signed and numbered A5 size art print created by Edward with your watch.

Edward Carvalho-Monaghan portrait

Edward Carvalho-Monaghan is an English artist residing in Slough in the UK (though if you were to ask his Sister, she’d say Windsor).

Edward explored the psychedelic and underground artwork of the 60’s and movements like De Stijl, amongst other things at St Martins College.

Upon leaving he developed a distinctive drawing style, melding the vivid influences drawn from his studies: a youthful obsession with surrealism and a growing interest in the Classical World and ancient cultures. These influences barge and spatter together in his designs, in a form he would currently describe as Plastic Gothic.
